Publicity that has an impact

Press releases do not get picked up. People do.

Somewhere in Tampa a reporter has two hundred unread pitches and about ninety minutes before deadline. Yours is in there.

Before she decides whether you are worth a phone call, she is going to look you up. What she finds is the real pitch. The email was just the knock on the door.

Awards work the same way. A judge reads your submission and then checks whether anybody else on earth seems to think it is true.

Reputation architecture We do not sell placements and we are not a press shop. We build the reason somebody wants to cover you, and the evidence that holds up when they go looking.

The award nobody found out you won

Here is how it usually goes. An email lands in March about an awards program. Somebody forwards it around. The night before the deadline your marketing coordinator writes twelve hundred words in a hurry, hits submit, and everybody forgets about it.

Then you win.

You get a trophy, a photo at a banquet, one LinkedIn post that does four hundred impressions, and a glass thing that sits on the shelf behind you on video calls. That is the whole return.

A win nobody hears about is a very expensive paperweight.

Getting covered is not the goal. Being the obvious person to call once somebody has read it is the goal.

The diagnosis

Why the pitch fails before anyone reads it

Your news is not news.

A new hire, a second location, a refreshed logo. Those matter enormously inside your building and they answer none of the question an editor is actually asking, which is why would my reader care about this today. You sent an announcement. She needed a story.

You are a stranger with no footprint.

If the last three months of your feed are a holiday graphic, a job posting and a photo of the office dog, there is nothing for her to verify. Editors check what you have been saying before they decide you are worth quoting. That is not cynicism. That is speed.

You applied for the wrong award.

There is a difference between an award that makes you look impressive to people in your own industry and an award your buyer has actually heard of. Those are rarely the same list, and almost nobody sits down and decides which list they are on this year. They just apply to whatever shows up.

We have done the lazy version ourselves. It is easier. It also does not work.

The fix

How recognition gets won on purpose

  1. We build the reason first.A point of view you are willing to defend, a number you can actually stand behind, or a story nobody else is in a position to tell. That is the thing a journalist picks up. Everything else is a press release with better adjectives.
  2. We make you verifiable before we make you loud. The surface somebody checks, your site, your profile, the first page of results, has to already agree with the claim you are about to make. Pitching before that is finished is how you get one story and no second call.
  3. We pick the list on purpose.A recognition calendar for the year, ordered by which rooms you want to be credible in rather than by which deadlines happen to be open. Some years that means skipping the one everybody enters.
  4. We write the submission like a story.A judge reads forty of these in a weekend. The one that gets remembered has a person in it, a moment where something could have gone wrong, and a specific outcome at the end.
  5. We plan what happens the day after you win.The video, the way it shows up in your next proposal, the note to clients, the twelve months of content that most companies leave on the table. This is the step everyone skips, and it is the one that pays.

Publicity lives inside reputation, not on top of it. If the story underneath is not built yet, coverage just gets more people to look at something that is not ready.

Proof

We have been on the applying end of this

In 2024 our founder, Tommy Whitehead, was named a Breakthrough Judges Award winner at the Tampa Bay Business and Wealth Apogee Awards for TomCo Solutions. That is the same process we run for clients, and it is why we are opinionated about the part that comes after the banquet.

  • Coverage and recognition that a buyer has actually heard of, so credibility arrives before you do.
  • A year of earned moments on a calendar instead of one scramble in March.
  • Material your sales team can put in front of a skeptical prospect without explaining what the award is.
  • A record of third-party validation that keeps working in proposals long after the news cycle is over.
Open placeholder Three of our founder’s four listed honors are still unverified against a primary source: the TBBW OUTstanding Voice Award, Tampa Club 40 Under 40, and the 2024 Individual Philanthropist of the Year finalist placement. Only the 2024 Apogee Breakthrough Judges Award is confirmed and used above. Client recognition examples are also missing and this page needs at least one.

Which room do you want to be credible in next year?

We will ask what you want to be known for, who you want to be known by, and what has to be true five years from now. If we are not the right firm for that, we will tell you.
